Once an operating jack-up drilling rig that operated from 1969 to 1984, the Ocean Star now serves as a museum. Located in the Gulf of Mexico, off the shores of the scenic Galveston harbor, this former oil rig currently features three levels of impressive artifacts and exhibits dedicated to the Texas oil industry. A self-guided facility, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum allows you to take an approximately 1.5 hour walking tour which features interactive experiences, historic items, and informative videos. The museum also offers several events throughout the year, including various overnight programs, teacher workshops, and fundraising events. Additionally, the Ocean Star offers Family Days, which highlight various themes related to the oil and gas industry. Held on the 2nd Saturday of every month from 10AM to 3PM, these hands-on activities and experiments encourage families to work together while learning and having fun.
Focused on bringing both Texas history and the West’s Golden Age to life, the Bryan Museum is one of the state’s most renowned destinations. The residence was purchased by Mary Jon Bryan in 2013, who thoughtfully restored it to its original glory. Opened in 2015, the Bryan Museum includes world-class art collections, educational and literacy programs, and unique exhibitions that directly expose visitors to that period, with an emphasis on the Spanish influences in the region. Situated at the site of the old Galveston Orphan’s Home, this museum boasts a sprawling 20,000 square feet of exhibit space set on the property’s lush grounds. Housing around 70,000 items in its permanent collection, this museum features 20,000 rare books, three dozen saddles, over 250 antique firearms, Native American stone tools and arrowheads, a Spanish mission bell, and so much more.
Situated on Pelican Island at Seawolf Park in Galveston, TX, this educational center boasts fascinating exhibits of American nautical history. Dedicated to preserving the integrity and authenticity of their water vessels while honoring U.S. military heroes, the Galveston Naval Museum is a must-visit during your time on the island. You can take a self-guided tour through a decommissioned World War II submarine, the USS Cavalla, which is one of the most accomplished vessels from that era. Formerly a presidential escort and the last of its kind, the incredible USS Stewart Destroyer is also available for self-guided tours. In addition to these incredible ships, the museum also hosts sleepovers, parties, and private events. After exploring the Galveston Naval Museum, you can take advantage of Seawolf’s Park’s impressive fishing piers, picnic sites, and playground as well.

Today, this expansive railroad depot houses a vast assortment of dining car fine china, two model railroad layouts, and 5 acres of trains. Incorporated in 1986 as the primary center of contemporary art, this organization is one of Galveston, TX’s most recognized cultural attractions. Serving a diverse, 8-county area throughout Beaumont, Corpus Christi, and Houston, the Galveston Arts Center is home to world-class exhibitions, alongside art education classes and workshops. Set inside the First National Bank building on the Strand, this non-profit is also responsible for the organization of Galveston’s famous art walk. This popular event supports the local arts community through partnership with art studios, local businesses, nonprofits, and downtown galleries. It occurs inside existing art galleries and other local spaces such as cafes and shops that display rotating art exhibits. The Galveston Artwalk allows you to view, learn about, and purchase original art. It occurs every 6-8 weeks on Saturdays, in the heart of the town’s historic district.
With lofty goals of fostering worthwhile art in schools and homes, soliciting public cooperation in support of art, encouraging artists, and holding exhibitions, the Galveston Arts League has been in operation for over 100 years. Recognized as the Best Art Gallery by the Galveston County Daily News’ annual Reader’s Choice Awards, this organization operates a charming gallery space on Postoffice Street in downtown Galveston and holds monthly art shows. The Galveston Arts League also invites all artists to submit original work to their juried shows where winners receive ribbons and cash awards. They also host several events during the year such as art workshops which are taught by experienced local artists, an annual gala, and exciting multi-day travel excursions.
